It was not easy for me to manage my weekend plans, as they are being tighter and tighter. I decided to go to Cambridge for one weekend which was really wisest ultimate decision all the way when I think it back now. For your information, Cambridge is the second oldest university of UK after Oxford, which has also very good reputation all over the world. It is one of those fine English university cities of bewitching charm that makes you want to go back again and again. Punting is a must for everyone and it is the best way to relax and see the views of Cambridge from a different perspectives. I took a guided tour for 45 minutes where I can explore historical buildings and listen to guide when I pass through. I wish I had taken some bread to feed all the hungry ducks on my way. After this great weekend in Cambridge, I waited eagerly to meet my school friends in London to spend a great time together in Scotland. We have planned to start our bus trip from London to Edinburgh in Scotland. We were all totally exhausted after 10 hours journey but we were extremely happy to meet each other after 7 years of time. On our first day we scheduled our programme to go outskirts and enjoy the vicinity of Edinburgh. We went to the oldest distillery of Scotland in Crieff which is the home of famous Scottisch Grouse whisky. Scotland is the world centre for whisky distilleries. The Famous Grouse whisky is one of Scotland’s most well known and best loved whiskies. Then we went to Stirling, which is very famous for Scotland’s National hero, William Wallace and Battle of Stirling Bridge. He was a Scottish patriot who led his country against the English (Norman) occupation of Scotland and King Edward I of England as part of the Wars of Scottish Independence. After this long drive we went back to the city centre for our dinner and enjoy the night life in Edinburgh. It was not only great celebration for us but also a great time to enjoy our freedom in one of the beautiful cities of Europe. We were all dead-tired when we went to bed around 3 am in the morning. Due to our short trip, we decided not to spent time by sleeping the whole day on Sunday. Around 1 pm, we went to Holyrood Park, which is a royal park in Edinburgh. It has an array of hills, lakes, cliffs within a small area. Arthur´s seat is the highest point is the highest point in Edinburgh which is at the centre of Park with the cliffs of Salisbury Crags to the west. Due to our tiredness, we just did a short walk around the park and enjoyed the view of city and sea. After 3-4 hours of city walk we had our dinner and returned back to London by night bus. This journey will be unforgettable for me because we did lot of jolly things there and shared our experiences and feelings after a long break of 7 years. Time does fly, doesn´t it? I got invitation for the Weaning Ceremony in Swindon in my second last weekend, which is again a must for me to visit all Nepali friends over there. It was really fortuitous to take part and meet so many known people after so many years. Some faces have lingered in my mind which made me quite comfortable to recognize it. All were very friendly and nice with me, which made me comfortable to take part in dancing and other casual talks. I would like to thank everyone once again for that wonderful relaxing evening. It was a real pity when my last week had come. I left beautiful Oxford for ever and missed profoundly my golden days over there. I spent 3 days in London before I took my flight to Austria. On my last 3 days, I spent my days visiting all the London attractions and friends with whom I went to Edinburgh 3 weeks before. Lastly, Great Britain made my 8 weeks great and memorable in my part of life.

  • My first 4 weeks in UK (Dec 2010)

When I was a child, I never thought of going abroad although my father was working in Austria. I always denied when somebody asked me about it. I was so proud of my country and thought of living there ever. Now it has changed a lot not only with me but also in my country. Everyone dreams of a foreign land after their high school in Nepal and UK comes under priority list of many students. Because of my family living in Austria, I never felt of being in foreign country though there are very few nepali societies. Now I am here in UK for 8 weeks to complete my part of internship in Oxford University. I have already spent my 4 weeks here. I want to share my 4 weeks experience in my blog.

    My video in Oxford

During my 5 year studies in Austria, I was the only one nepali student in my medical university and it was quite nice to be the first one. When I first arrived in UK, it was not a great shock to me due to some similarities between European countries. Even though, everything seemed to be very grey and dull. I was very curious to see my university and my dream city Oxford. After my arrival, I took my bus from London Stansted to Oxford. Bus services are more popular than train for intercity here. I was not accustomed to such small grey houses in UK. The flat where I am living is made up of bricks which gave me the impression of my home country. On my first working day, I was surprised to see so many staffs from different countries. In Austria, everyone used to look at me as if I came from another planet. People from all countries are so mixed up that no one feels of being outlandish here. Even Oxford medical students are originally more or less from other countries than the real British students. On the beginning, I felt uncomfortable to speak in English after a long break from my school in Nepal. But I find it very interesting and beneficial to use the language again what I have learned in my school time. I can still remember the days when I learned my German language with the help of my English. Now everything has changed in my 5 years and it was hilarious to think in German now. There were also other elective students living in my flat. I was quite happy to meet students from Brazil, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. Oh I forgot, I didn´t tell you my experience of supermarket here. I was astonished, when I saw Samosa, Pakaouda and many others Indian deep frozen food in normal British supermarket. I didn´t believe my eyes when I saw only south asian workers to communicate for daily life activities. Even my taxi driver was Indian when I took from bus station to my flat on the first day.  I had a great time with elective students on my first week and also got to know the typical pub quiz in UK. I would better tell you about my life in UK not my hospital and clinical work here. On my first weekend, I visited some colleges of Oxford University with one friend of Austria, who came to visit me from Germany. My other days in hospital were quite unspectacular. On my second weekend I went to London to visit my cousin, which is just 1 hour far away from bus. On my way to his house, I just astonished all the times. That crowd and rush of people in Victoria train station loathed my expectations. In fact, I visited my cousin Santosh and his family after a gap of 7 years. I got amazed to see so many nepali students living in small house there. Later I realized the expensive pound life in London and the necessity to survive here. On the next day, I went with my cousin to some areas of London. On our way, we went through a place

    Santosh dai and Sansar

Southhall, where only Indian people are living. All those emotional and exciting things came at once. I saw a cinema hall with Indian movie posters, Indian restaurant, Indian sweets and only Indian people moving here and there on the streets. I thought of being in New Delhi all of a sudden. Even banners were written in Hindi language. One day I will post you a video from this street and will ask you to find out the difference from real India. I bought some original nepali Waiwai noodles in one Indian shop.  You can buy and  see everything here from all over the world. You will also get deep  frozen Nepali momo in supermarket. You might not believe me but I  went for the first time in life to Nepali dohari restaurant with friends  of cousin in UK. And again in next weekend, I went to London to  celebrate New Year’s Eve. I dreamt of this event almost one year  ago  when I planned my elective here. I went again with my cousin  and his family to London city centre to watch fireworks. We left  house around 5 pm just to watch fireworks of midnight. I didn´t  regret although we waited around 4 hours for that great moment  because we were luckily on the best place to watch fireworks. It was  so crowded that we needed almost 3 hours to get back home. On my  4th weekend I went to Swindon to visit one friend of father living there since 7 years. On my coming weekend, I am going to Cambridge. I hope for the good weather which is very unlikely here.  SEE YOU SOON.
